Listening comprehension skills: The food groups

Listening comprehension skills

Topic based learning: The food groups

To complete the Project Base Learning on healthy food and to cover the four basic language learning skills, we suggest an interactive listening comprehension activity using Edpuzzle where students can listen and pause the video, as well as reading to hear the phonetics and words. For the English learning, since it is a It is highly recommended to connect words with its phonetic and spelling.  That is why this activity can provide students listening input with visual support to enhance the students' learning progress.

Therefore, for this activity we suggest the following steps:

1 - Preparation for the listening comprehension activity:

By asking the students what they know about food groups, it is important that the class come up with the five different groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy.
Of course children will mention each food group in Spanish or Catalan (most likely), then we need to introduce the English word by writing it on the board.

To support this contextualization pre-listening activity we will offer our students some time to experiment with the flip card activity we have created on Worldwall. With this activity children can get falimiarized with the five group foods in a fun way. They can repeat the tast as many times as they need in order to understand the content of the activity. By connecting visual images, text and phonetics we are helping our students' with their long-term memory learning. Before doing the activity we should explain our students that they are going to play with a flip card learning game where each image correspond to a product and each product belongs to a food group.

Your students may also access to the Worldwall flip cards activity by reading the QC with their mobile phones:

2 - Listening comprehension activity:

Now it is time to view and listen the video, which teachers can run twice. During the first run, students can familiarize with its content by recognizing vocabulary that they know and guess new vocabulary using context. At this point, we will run the original video from Learning Time Fun: The AMAZING Food Groups for Kids! | Science Learning Videos for Children (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaCGo6WmKBo).
After the first run, we can do a second run with the edited version with Edpuzzle, specially created for the activity purpose.

To submit the listening comprehension assignment students can use an electronic devise such as a tablet, a computer or a mobile phone.
